A Sewing Pattern

Description:

If you've mastered threading a machine and changing stitches, but you still want some help moving on to the next step and figuring out how to layout and read a pattern, this is the class for you. It will be taught in an 'independent study' manner, where each student will decide on their own individual project, much of the work will be self-driven, and the instructor will be there to mentor and assist as you go. Your instructor will be in contact via email prior to the first class to discuss what kind of project you had in mind, and what kind of patterns and fabrics are appropriate. You will need to have your pattern, fabric, thread, and notions purchased prior to the first class.

Class Goals:

Students will come out of the class with a finished garment of their choosing, and will have furthered their skills and comfort level with machine sewing.

Prerequisites:

Intro Sewing, or basic familiarity with threading a machine, winding a bobbin, changing stitches and stitch length, and sewing a straight and curved line.

Materials:

You will need a pattern, fabric, thread, and any notions (such as zippers, buttons, or elastics) indicated on your pattern. Your instructor will discuss these with you, but purchasing them will be on your own prior to the first class.

Instructor Biography:

Carolyn Emberley

Carolyn Emberley sewed her first wallet by hand with some of her mom's quilting scraps and embroidery floss in the third grade. In addition to learning that embroidery floss is not the correct thing to use as thread, she learned to use her mother's sewing machine later that year, and has been sewing things ever since. She has a BFA in Studio Art from UMass Amherst. For most of her time there, she taught a variety of classes at the Student Union Craft Center, including sewing.
